One of the most critical aspects of the project was enhancing the facility’s electrical infrastructure. The team upgraded electrical panels, improved normal and emergency power distribution, strengthened grounding and bonding systems, and integrated a new Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS). HVAC systems were also assessed and upgraded to support the new infrastructure, ensuring optimal performance. To accommodate these improvements, several areas underwent reconfiguration, with selective demolition, new construction, and high-quality finishes creating a modernized space that aligned with the project’s technical requirements.
Communication infrastructure was another key focus, as the facility required a more robust network to support high-speed data transmission. Bancroft oversaw the installation of new data outlets and patch panels and upgraded the existing system to Cat 6A cabling. At the same time, the firm worked to enhance the security and resilience of the facility’s data center. Physical security measures were strengthened, new pathways for WAN connectivity were installed, and fiber infrastructure was upgraded both within and between buildings. To maintain safety and compliance, the team also addressed hazardous material abatement throughout the project.
The data center itself underwent a significant transformation, with new infrastructure seamlessly integrated with the existing systems to ensure full compliance with EHRM standards. The design provided 2N redundancy, guaranteeing continuous operation and reliability. A new 175kW UPS was installed to serve both the A and B bus, with a system designed for stability and efficiency. With a 480V input and 208V output, the UPS featured a built-in transformer, a maintenance bypass cabinet, and a modular design allowing for 50kW increments and a minimum 10-minute runtime. Two new Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS) were installed to supply power to the data center, feeding into newly designated panels ‘CHA’ and ‘CHB,’ which distributed critical power to panelboards supporting both existing and new loads. The power distribution system was carefully planned, with color-coded Bus A and Bus B connections ensuring clear identification of redundant power sources.
With the successful completion of this project, the facility is now equipped with a modernized infrastructure capable of supporting the future of digital healthcare. Bancroft’s expertise in complex system upgrades ensured a seamless transition, strengthening the reliability, security, and efficiency of the VA’s IT network. These improvements will play a crucial role in enhancing patient care, providing the technological foundation needed to support veterans for years to come.
