The project modernized 1,600 SF of space across several additions to the original 1945 structure. Central to the project was designing an electrical distribution system capable of supporting a new 3T MRI system. The primary goal was to replace the aging Philips Achiva XR Quasar 1.5T MRI Scanner with a state-of-the-art Philips Magnetom Sola MRI machine and its associated support systems.
Bancroft prepared detailed construction documents to guide the removal of the old MRI and site preparation for the installation of the new equipment, which was procured separately by the VA. To enable the equipment transition, significant demolition and site preparation were required. Pathways were created through adjacent rooms to remove the old MRI magnet and bring in the new unit. The team modified doorways and entrances and selectively removed and reinstalled walls where necessary. Existing MRI, control, and equipment rooms were reconfigured to house the new system. Once the installations were complete, rooms and corridors were restored with new finishes, returning them to their original condition.
During design, the team assessed the MRI area's shielding and developed repair strategies to maintain the space’s RF integrity. A new access and exit route was also created, which required evaluating the underlying structural supports to determine whether additional bracing was needed for moving the MRI magnet. On the exterior, a new slab on grade was installed to support auxiliary MRI equipment. Bancroft designed new MEP systems to support the updated MRI suite and specified all new finishes in the affected areas. A particularly distinctive design feature was the inclusion of custom accent lighting capable of motion and color changes to emulate the Aurora Borealis. This element was thoughtfully integrated to offer patients a calming and immersive visual experience during their treatments.
